Before beginning a painting I make a number of preparatory studies—as many as are necessary to work out details of drawing and composition.

Often, for preliminary studies or simply for the pleasure of it,  I make “finished” drawings in graphite, conte crayon  or charcoal.  Line and tone  and all the variations one can achieve with the simplest of tools can be as satisfying as color.
